Participatory Workshops: Ensuring community support

by | Jun 10, 2014

In April, community members met with project partners in participatory workshops to identify and prioritise the crucial issues and feasible solutions for building resilience to urban flooding in Bene Baraque. Involving the residents of Bene Baraque in the planning and design process as experts on their situation was highly effective: Their contributions made it possible to ensure that the solutions selected are appropriate for the community, including for example income levels. Involving the community in this way had a strong impact on building the resilience of the community. To ensure that community engagement will be extended throughout the project and beyond the project lifecycle, a community advisory board was created. Together these participatory methods will contribute to the sustainability of project interventions beyond the duration of the intervention.
